Passions and Constraint: On the Theory of Liberal Democracy
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (May, 1995)
Authors: Stephen Holmes and David S. Holmes
Average review score:

stalking horse bites straw man
Holmes makes a paradoxical defense of a simple argument, that freedom requires rules, for instance, a constitution is not a straitjacket but the double yellow lines that keep traffic flowing. But what is the alternative? The only thinkable alternative is anarchy, and surely no one would defend that. Conservatives often attack the desiccation of substantive democracy by procedural democracy, but according to Holmes procedural democracy is the grease on the skids of substantive democracy. But if the only alternative to Holmes arguement is the formlose Formende of Schmittian soccer-stadium democracy, then he makes a trivial argument to discredit a non-sensical one. He seems to find endless fascination in the paradox of a freedom engendered by rules and the paradoxes of self-binding, but more interesting and paradoxical is the fact that rules often take on a life of their own and encumber the very freedom they were instituted to safeguard, like the alarm clock which rings on Saturday morning. The argument is a stalking horse because he is not defending procedural democracy, which no one would attack (who loves the constitution more than conservatives?), but rather the regulatory and welfare state, which is not bound by rules but in fact conceals bureaucratic authoritarianism under the guise of democratic proceduralism.

The Path of the Law
Published in Digital by Amazon Press ()
Author: Oliver Wendell Holmes
Average review score:

Great, short book
I believe this book is transcribed from a speech given by Holmes to a group of lawyers, judges, scholars at HLS. It is Holmes' prediciton for the future of the law and it is extremely prescient. For anyone interested in the law it is a must read, and at about 34 pages a very quick and enjoyable one.

People of the Dawn (Holme Trilogy, Vol 2)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (February, 1990)
Authors: Jan Fridgard, Robert E. Bjork, and Jan Fridegard
Average review score:

Better Than Part One!
This work is the second volume in the Holme Trilogy. This is an interesting & unique body of work, because the hero in this Viking saga isn't the traditional warrior - his slave is. Holme has freed himself & his family from the homestead that kept them as slaves all their lives. Venturing to a fictionalized trade city, based on the actual town of Birka, Holme ends up becoming a master smith & a man well-respected (by some) & feared (by all). Holme is not satisfied with just his family being free, but goes on to fight for all thralls to become freemen. Another theme in the trilogy that gains more importance in this book, is the spread of Christianity into the heathen land where most people worship barbaric & crude wooden gods. As Holme gets used to being around people, his intelligence & philosophy become sharper, & as in the last novel, there's virtually no dialogue and the book will slip from a modern-day narrator to Holme or other character's own stream-of-consciousness narrating the tale. As in the first book, this is a wonderful story, loaded with beautiful & haunting imagry. The descriptions are vivid & striking. The author is a brilliant artist, making this one of the best books I've ever read.

Pocahontas: The True Story of an American Hero and Her Christian Faith (Rubber Stamps and Book Sets)

Author's REBUTTAL of Horn Book Review
While I appreciate Horn Book's representative taking the time to "review" my book, I am a bit taken aback by its aggressive and almost hostile tone. In light of this "literary reprimand", I thought you, the potential purchaser, deserved to know that a Virginia Historian who specializes in the story and history of Pocahontas reviewed this book as well. I am happy to relate to you that his review on it was overall favorable. I specifically asked him about some of my assertions regarding John Rolfe and Pocahontas' sharing of the Bible and her personal freedom in converting to a faith in Jesus Christ and he assured me it was well within the realm of possibilities based on the surviving data and historical records of this time.

I mean no ill will towards the Horn Book Reviewer but, like many, I prefer to form my own opinion of a book or movie or play. On a personal note, I do question why this Reviewer felt it important to seek out this individual site and post this most unflattering review of it. The Reviewer's further assertion that this book is unacceptable to "even to the devout audience" is shamelessly arrogant and hopelessly petty. I suspect this Reviewer allowed himself (or herself) to put more confidence in her (or his) personal reading taste than is merited. To date, over 30,000 copies of this book have been purchased. While this will certainly not qualify it for the "New York Times Bestseller's List", it clearly illustrates a definite and marked contrast to this Reviewer's unkind and unprofessional assertion that is somehow, "unacceptable" -- even to the "devout". Perhaps this Reviewer is using his/her platform as a "Reviewer" to implement his/her own brand of censorship.

If you're looking for a book that casually explores - based on the historical record - what may have been going on in Pocahontas' heart and mind to have prompted her to convert to Christianity, I know you'll enjoy this book. I was largely motivated to wr! ite it when I learned how far Disney has strayed, neglected and falsified the story of Pocahontas. I have two children of my own and was eager to share the compelling power of the love of Jesus as illustrated through the story of this fascinating, courageous and independent young girl. It is not -- and was never intended to be -- the "end-all" on the story of Pocahontas. It simply adds to the data on this heroic child.

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (June, 1977)
Author: Vincent Starrett
Average review score:

Out of print, but worth the effort (1977 paperback review)
This is an excellent book for anyone with even a passing interest in Sherlock Holmes. It's a series of essays-- more like discussions, or tributes-- and a few useful lists, with photogrpahs, drawings, and a nice short pastiche (written with as much skill that it might have been written by Watson himself.)
It's currently out of print, but you can easily buy a copy from one of the sellers here on Amazon.[com.] I can't vouch for the harback or first edition copies, but the paperback from 1977 is usually surprisingly [low cost]. Really, you're getting more than your money's worth. The writing is charming and smart. I would say this is a necessary addition to any Sherlockian home library.

Profits, Taxes, & LLCs
Published in Paperback by All Year Tax Guides (September, 2002)
Author: Holmes F. Crouch
Average review score:

A Different Approach
I gave Mr. Crouch 5 stars because it is obvious that he is not simply repeating the same old thing I can find in most other books relating to corporations and LLCs and their benefits. He walks you through most of the technical matters in a tutorial way, explaining the significance of different laws and what they say & don't say. He provides much food for thought that I found nowhere else. He is a breath of fresh air after reading extensively on these topics. This book should be on your shelf if you own, manage, or have a need to learn about LLCs.

Practical ideas for motivating behavior change
Written by Wendy Holmes for the International Rescue Committee, Protecting The Future: HIV Prevention, Care And Support Among Displaced And War-Affected Populations is unfortunate but extremely necessary resource for the twenty-first century, as it presents both short and long-term consequences of the ravages of HIV/AIDS among the globe's populations and exhorts strategies for preventing and containing the spread of this deadly virus. Practical ideas for motivating behavior change, promoting improved sexual health, preventing the transmission of the virus from mothers to children and more fill this welcome and much needed contribution to health and medicine reference shelves. Protecting The Future is seminal, necessary, and highly recommended.
